JR East's 10-car E5 series. KATO has produced two different 10-car editions with different product numbers: an earlier U4-set model and a newer U3-set model with a slotless motor.
Quick answer: which sets make the full train?
KATOKATO E5 "Hayabusa" (U3 set, slotless motor): 10-1969 + 10-1970 + 10-1971 = 10 cars. Motor car: car 7.
KATO describes this as a different prototype set (U3) from its earlier product.
E514-3 has a front coupler for running coupled with an E6 "Komachi" (sold separately).

Car 1 = Tokyo end. Read from KATO's diagram. The diagram prints car 10 as "E515-4", the same as car 9; the end car type is E514 on the newer diagram, so the exact running number of car 10 is shown as not confirmed.

Formation Builder
Tick the product numbers you already own. The builder shows which cars you have and which sets complete the formation. It only uses the set contents listed in our database.
Compatibility and earlier editions
Product numbers are the safest way to match sets. A re-release can keep the same number with small changes, or come out under a new number with a different prototype train. Earlier editions are kept separate here and are not treated as the same product.

KATO's E5 sets exist in two editions with different product numbers: the U4 set (10-1663 / 10-1664 / 10-1665) and the U3 set (10-1969 / 10-1970 / 10-1971).
The car split is the same in both editions (basic: cars 1, 7, 10; add-on A: 3, 6, 9; add-on B: 2, 4, 5, 8), but the running numbers differ, so a mixed train would carry two different set numbers.
The U3 edition uses a slotless motor; the U4 edition uses a flywheel power unit. KATO's pages do not say whether mixing editions is intended.
